On Wednesday, after 19 countries, 15,000km, and nearly £100,000 raised, Mr Stuart Block returned to Cranleigh on his tandem bicycle.

Having started from Johannesburg over eleven months ago, crowds gathered outside the Speech Hall to welcome home Mr Block and his team for the final day’s cycling. Thirteen students from this year’s departing UVIth completed the final leg, a 95km journey from Tonbridge School to Cranleigh. Additionally, three members of staff joined the group, including the Headmaster who joined Mr Block on the back of the tandem for the final 20km.

This sense of companionship and teamwork has characterised much of Mr Block’s journey. He has had over 150 stokers (those riding on the back of the tandem), including many locals met along the way, as well as those involved and benefitting from charities Stuart is raising money for. Celebrities on the ride have included Freddie Flintoff, Graeme Le Saux and Lawrence Dallaglio.

The £100,000 raised will go towards four charities, with Beyond Ourselves as the principal beneficiary. Cranleigh’s dedication to this cause, and the wider Beyond Cranleigh project, will continue to strengthen with 19 VIth Form pupils currently preparing to journey to our partner Kawama School in Zambia over the summer holidays.

Thus although Mr Block’s journey is over, Cranleigh’s commitment to these causes continues. We are still seeking long-term educational support for the students at Kawama School through our child sponsorship programme

Everyone at the School wishes to congratulate Mr Block for his epic achievement, whilst we look forward to our July and October trips continuing the successful start to this important Cranleigh project.
