Kawama Day 4

The day commenced with an eye-watering 6:30 am start. The agenda for the day consisted of interviewing each and every child who attends Kawama School. This was going to be a mammoth task but we were all really looking forward to formally meeting the pupils.

After our arrival in Kawama, a big queue formed quickly outside the church. Once inside, the registration team sorted through piles of forms until the correct one was found. Next came height, weight and BMI measurements (with the lowest at 12.8 (!), but with most improving), which are taken to monitor the health and well-being of the children.

On completion of the health-checks, each pupil and their carer were interviewed to gain a better understanding of their day-to-day lives and to help the Beyond Ourselves team plan how best to help them and cater for any difficulties that they may face.

Finally two photos were taken, an updated one of the pupil, and one of them with their family as a gift from Beyond Ourselves.

By the end of the morning the Cranleigh team had interviewed 174 pupils, but despite their weariness they had time for a prolonged game of football before returning to the Town House and the task of inputting all the data that had been collected.

Tomorrow we will be teaching craft to the children as well as following up on today’s interviews, reading and playing games with the pupils and visiting a different nearby school to recognise more fully the journey that Kawama has made over the past few years. We will report back tomorrow night to let you know how it goes.
