The Fifth Form were treated to a stimulating talk on the Roman army by award-winning novelist, Ben Kane, last week. Armed with multiple items of Roman military apparatus (the helmets and chain mail jerseys both students and staff were only too willing to model!), Ben divulged a vast quantity of information about the evolution of the great Roman fighting machine, from tactics, clothing style and the social lives of soldiers.
The incorporation of architectural reconstructions, in addition to literary sources and archaeological material and data, made this a highly interactive talk which, imbedded with personal anecdotes from an experienced researcher, was enjoyed by all.
