This year’s House Performance promised much and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Right from the outset the quality was high and credit must go to all performers and organisers for being able to pull off their routines and part-songs with incredible ease, despite minimal rehearsal time.
The evening started with Loveday and West’s part-song, ‘Somebody that I Used to Know’, which was arranged by Hebe Westcott, Livi Burgon and Rachel Hurst. It was performed with confidence and even included a beat box element, which ultimately saw them take first place. This was followed by Cubitt and South, who performed a mixture of songs including ‘Hometown Glory/Oh my Gosh/Swim Good’, and Alex Foster, Gabs Hill, Ellie Morgan and Katie Batchelor all performed their respective solos with aptitude and this resulted in a fine sound. North and West were next and they sang a ‘Seven Nation Army’ mash-up, with solos from Luke Boyd and Georgia Hart which helped their performance come in at a credible second. Last to perform were East and South, and Bruno Broughton and Anoushka Muir arranged the music for ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ and ‘We Found Love’. Particular credit should go to Phoebe Bagge, who got a notable mention from the Judge Lucy Griffiths, no relation to AJG, which the audience found particularly amusing as he tried to explain.
The IVth Form dance followed and North were first on the stage, performing a miraculous routine to ‘Gangnam Style’ which left the audience in awe and saw Lucy Griffiths award them the coveted top place: it was hard to argue against that decision. East were next, and they performed with confidence and precision which included dancing to a Bollywood song! Loveday followed East and performed a routine to the London Olympics theme tune, and even included a comedy moment when AAGL beat Mo Farah and Usain Bolt to the finish line and they took second place behind North. Cubitt were last to take the stage, and performed good group moves to Usher’s ‘Yeah’.
The evening was rounded off by a performance from ‘Easy on the Amoeba’, with stand-in singer Georgia Hart filling in for the ill Tom Gass.
Credit must go, as always, to the technical department, led impeccably by MRJ and they allowed the evening to run smoothly with some cool effects.
