Henry Lamont (East, 2012) has been selected to play for Oxford University against Cambridge University in the Varsity match at Twickenham on Thursday 6th December 2012.

Henry, the only under-graduate in either side, will join a select band of players to have made the Varsity team in their fresher year. Starting his Cranleigh career in the bottom set for Chemistry at 13 years old, Henry is now reading Chemistry at St Edmund’s Hall, Oxford.

Since the Second World War, the only OC Blue has been Jeffrey Clements (East 1951) who played in 1953, 1954 and 1955, captaining Cambridge in his final year before going on to gain three England caps while still playing for the Old Cranleighans at blind-side flanker. Our last Oxford Blues were HP Jacob and Maurice McCanlis between the wars – both also went on to play for England.

Andrew Houston, the Director of Rugby at Cranleigh, remarked: “I am delighted that all the hard work Henry has put into both his academics and rugby has paid off. He trains incredibly hard and, mixed with his unquestionable talent, he has the ability to go all the way in Rugby. We as a School are so very proud of him and we know that he will light up Twickenham next week. It is hard to believe that when Henry was 13 years old he was in the bottom set for Chemistry and now, six years later, he is studying it at one of the world’s top universities. Again, we wish Henry all the best for the match and are incredibly proud of his achievements.”
