Dr Richard Reid, former colleague of SAAB and now visiting professor at Dundee University, came to Cranleigh on the evening of Monday February 11th to give a speech to all VIth form Economists entitled ‘Global growth: back to the future’.
Dr Reid spoke of how some countries are finding it difficult to recover their export volumes to pre-recession levels, as well as the dangers of an aging population and of potential plans to combat this. We were particularly interested by the revealing of the fact that most gains in life expectancy are achieved before reaching a per capita GDP of $10,000 which surprised many of us. It was an enriching lecture, particularly as both LVIth and UVIth students begin to embark on the macroeconomic course this term.
