The first weekend of the half term holiday did not afford the Cranleigh riders a lie-in as they headed off for two days of competitions, the Saturday giving everyone a chance to hone their skills outdoors after a quiet couple of months and the Sunday presenting our more experienced riders with the chance to qualify for this October’s NSEA Championships for both Arena Eventing and Show Jumping.
It was great to see new riders taking up the reins on the Saturday and our teams were well placed in all of the classes. Most of the team were back out on the Sunday too, with a very positive (if slightly frustrating) result in the Mini Arena Eventing when we were third – only the top two teams qualify! However, this was a fine result for Sam Hollidge, Lila Millard, Alex Moor and Freddy Moore in what is a technically difficult event. Alex and Lila more than made up for their disappointment in the show jumping class, however, when, joined by Phoebe Going (in only her second competitive round of jumping), they secured a second place qualification for the nationals: this was particularly pleasing given that they were reduced to a team of three after Freddy Moore suffered a concussion! In addition Lila secured an individual qualification too by finishing second in this big class. The Novice Arena Eventing team of Freya Hough, Sam Hollidge, Chantelle Phillips and Lila Millard went one better to win their competition but suffered the same frustration in the show jumping by finishing third! A final qualification of the day went to the Intermediate Arena Eventing team of Freya, Charlotte Livingstone, Caileigh Faure and Lily Hibbert who finished in second spot. A really encouraging performance from everyone particularly since the South East is the most competitive region in which to qualify.
