Last week, Lower Sixth artists travelled to Tate Modern to view exhibitions by Franz West and Dorothea Tanning. The visit was designed to help students as they plan the start of their A level coursework. Franz West had been introduced by Mr Kinnersly in a lesson before the trip, so students were intrigued to see what this maverick artist’s work was like in actuality. The work didn’t disappoint, and we enjoyed playing with West’s ‘Adaptives’ and viewing his wide-ranging pieces.

Dorothea Tanning is sometimes described a the last Surrealist, but her show at Tate Modern was more Gothic than dream-based. We found her work quite problematic; the general consensus was this was skilful but slightly vacuous work! A view not shared by other reviewers.

Students were then able to explore the Tate’s main collections; the only regret being that we didn’t have more time!
