To coincide with the opening of the new van Hasselt Centre, the humanities departments at Cranleigh have launched the van Hasselt Award for journalistic writing in the humanities. The award will be run twice a term and is open to all Cranleigh students. Students will receive a choice of three open ended questions and are expected to produce a 700-800 word, fully researched opinion piece of journalistic writing. The winning entry and runner up will be decided by the Heads of Departments from the humanities subjects.

The first award was launched at the end of the Easter holidays, which saw a large number of entries from all different school year groups. All entries were of extremely high quality and were fascinating to read, but in the end the judges decided that the runner up was Henry Mould, and the winner of the first award was Freya Johnson for her outstanding article on the need for a punitive tax on Carbon to help deal with the climate change crisis. Both entries can be viewed here

The next instalment of the van Hasselt Award will be launched after May half term.
