On the afternoon of Wednesday 18th January, we held our third annual Organ Outreach Day, and were delighted to welcome seven pupils from Danes Hill School, together with ten members of the Surrey Organists Association, to enjoy listening to and playing the wonderful Mander Organ in our Chapel. Only one of the pupils had played an organ before, most of them being pianists who were clearly enthusiastic to “have a go” on the instrument.

After an introduction and short demonstration from me, each of the children (including Josh G. and Charlie F. from Cranleigh Prep School) took it in turns to play their prepared piano pieces on the organ, and to discover what a totally different feel and character the two instruments have. Then, after I gave a short recital to highlight the vast array of different colours which the organ possesses, the children went home, and it was the adults’ turn to explore the instrument. The Chapel organ has a terrific reputation both locally and nationally, and it is always a joy to see the looks of pleasure and surprise on the faces of visitors who come and play it for the first time.
