During the last week of term, Lower Sixth artists had a fantastic day in London visiting Tate Britain’s All Too Human exhibition, as a focus for their new A Level coursework project. The exhibition, which focuses on key 20th century figure painting by major artists including Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Paula Rego along with four contemporary painters, was both engaging and inspiring; very rarely is such work seen together.

The Saatchi Gallery, our second stop, has a reputation for showing adventurous contemporary work and their newly opened show Known Unknowns is no exception. Cranleigh students found the contemporary pieces more challenging than those at the Tate but the short introductory tour opened our eyes to the ideas and issues being dealt with, and the ambition of the work had real impact. We returned tired but inspired for the new project work ahead.
