Sports Update 4th September 2026
3 minute readWelcome back.
In sport, the achievements this summer have been exceptional, not only in terms of performance, but also in the commitment shown by our pupils to pre-season and then to representing their clubs and academies throughout the summer.
Over 170 pupils engaged with our pre-season programme in hockey and rugby. That level of commitment so early in the summer is hugely encouraging, and I’d like to take a moment to thank the parents for the hours spent driving your children to and from school during those weeks. I’d also like to thank the staff who gave up three weeks of their holiday to get our programmes up and running in mid-August. That commitment from everyone involved makes a huge difference.
We’ve also seen some outstanding individual achievements.
In cricket, Zan Copleston finished as one of the country’s leading run-scorers for Sussex U18s and has been featuring regularly for the Sussex 2nd XI. He capped off the school season by breaking our all-time batting record, scoring an extraordinary 1,097 runs at an average of 84.
Samand Khan also produced a series of outstanding performances for Hampshire U18s, earning himself a place on their winter academy programme.
In rugby, thirteen Lower Fifth boys were selected for the Harlequins U15 Academy, with Alfie Perret and Luke Wessels already representing the Harlequins U18s in August.
In triathlon, we can celebrate two national champions. Rafi Weeks took Gold at the British Triathlon Championships, while Benji Wilmot became the British Triathlon Sprint Distance Champion.
And in equestrian sport, Tara Moore represented Great Britain at the Junior European Championships in Sweden.
These are fantastic achievements, and they are a real reflection of the ambition, commitment and hard work of our pupils, supported by their families, coaches and staff.
This week marks the start of our school sporting year, and with it comes the opportunity to set the standards for the year ahead. I have already spoken to the pupils about the importance of sporting behaviours, both on and off the pitch, and this is something I know you will strongly support as parents watching and encouraging from the sidelines. We aspire to be leaders not only in sporting performance, but also in the way we conduct ourselves, and I know our pupils will represent the school with pride, humility and respect throughout the year. With the ground currently very hard, rugby will take a staggered approach to the start of contact, with different age groups returning to contact at different points. This will ensure that, when the pitches are fit and safe for play, we are fully prepared and ready to get our fixtures underway.
