What is our learning ethos in Reception?
In Cranleigh Reception year children learn by doing – moving, exploring and taking part in hands‑on activities. Small class sizes (maximum 20 pupils) and specialist Early Years teachers mean every child gets expert and close support.
Classrooms are set up for active learning rather than long periods of sitting. We teach systematic synthetic phonics – where pupils learn letter sounds and blend them to read words – as well as early reading, writing and number skills daily within a play-rich setting. This approach builds confidence, curiosity and strong foundations for future learning.
How does Cranleigh teach mixed-ability Reception classes?
How does Cranleigh teach mixed-ability Reception classes?
Cranleigh’s Reception classes are mixed-ability and designed to nurture every child as an individual. Teaching is carefully tailored so that children are supported where they need it and stretched where they are ready, ensuring strong progress, confidence and a love of learning at every level. Expert Early Years teachers and teaching assistants know each child deeply, spot needs early on and work closely with Learning Support and parents so any early flags become opportunities for support. Every pupil is guided forward at a pace that’s right for them.
