Cranleigh Year 5-6 learning is shaped around how 9-11 year olds learn best.  Pupils explore an ambitious, inspiring, knowledge-rich curriculum through investigations, debates, fieldwork, performance and other active approaches. Real-life, cross-curricular experiences help pupils connect their learning to the wider world and see the relevance of what they study. This approach fosters a love of learning and strengthens pupil confidence.

How does Cranleigh approach mixed-ability learning in Year 5–6?

Cranleigh’s mixed-ability teaching approach in Years 5-6 (ages 9-11) balances growing academic ambition with strong pastoral support. High-ability pupils are stretched through extension work, enrichment and scholarship guidance. Pupils needing additional support benefit from calm, focused guidance tailored to their needs. Individual progress is closely monitored to ensure teaching always delivers at a pace that feels right for them.

What time does the Year 5–6 day start and finish?

The Cranleigh School Year 5-6 day (ages 9-11) runs from 8am - 4.50pm, Monday to Friday. After-school clubs and supervised prep are available until 6pm, providing flexible wraparound care for families.

What is SPARK for Cranleigh Prep Year 5-6 classes?

SPARK is Cranleigh Prep’s enrichment programme, designed to open up the world beyond the classroom and build the skills they need for the modern world. In Years 5–6, pupils are introduced to a range of practical life skills and future focused experiences that encourage them to think more independently, share ideas through structured debate and work together on meaningful projects.

What engaging activities are part of Year 5–6 SPARK?

In Years 5–6, pupils take part in a range of hands-on SPARK experiences such as first aid training, Bikeability (cycling training programme) and enterprise projects where they design, make and market their own products. These activities link academic learning with real-life, helping pupils develop creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills and an early understanding of how ideas become reality.

What is the Cranleigh Prep Library like for Years 5-6?

The Prep library at Cranleigh School is a welcoming space designed to inspire a love of reading and learning. It offers a wide range of fiction, classics, contemporary literature and non-fiction. Our strong reading culture and librarian guidance encourages pupils to discover new interests, build confidence and curiosity, and develop academically through increasingly sophisticated reading material.

Are there 11+ exams?

No, children automatically move up to Cranleigh Senior without additional testing.  We can prepare pupils moving elsewhere for 11+ entry exams.

How much homework?

Year 5-6 pupils typically have 45–60 minutes of homework each evening. This gentle step up from Year 4 helps them build organisation, independence and steady study habits as they move through Middle Prep.

Can my child sit a scholarship for Senior?

Yes, 11+ scholarship guidance begins at the start of Year 6, with support offered across a wide range of subjects. The focus is on preparation, confidence and healthy stretch rather than pressure.

Are there trips or residential stays?

Yes, residential experiences continue through Years 5–6, building confidence, independence and cultural as well as academic understanding, while also strengthening friendships.

Is there a leadership programme?

Yes, there are a number of leadership roles pupils can hold. These roles recognise contribution, responsibility and service rather than status and actively prepare pupils for the growing independence of Years 7-8 and Senior School.

What test or interview does my child need to take to move to senior school?

They will have an activity day which includes taster lessons, familiarisation interviews and team building sessions.
